Invested in the Eugene-Springfield Community – Why Delta Wants to Do More

Posted on April 27, 2018June 4, 2018

Delta Sand & Gravel and Delta Construction are both extremely proud of the community we have helped to build since 1927. Our mission has always been to create rock solid foundations for the structures we live in, for the roads we travel and for the lives of the people who use each one of them. That’s why we volunteer and donate to events and organizations that make positive impacts in Lane County.

Community Events

Ducks Unlimited Annual Banquet

Those who know the Babb family and the Delta team, know that we love the land we work with every day, and that we care about preserving the natural life that we share it with. For this reason, we partner with Ducks Unlimited (DU). Our partnership has resulted in the construction and maintenance of wood duck nesting boxes and goose nesting perches along the filtration ponds at the back of our property.

On March 30, we were excited to sponsor a table at the Eugene/Springfield/Junction City Ducks Unlimited Annual Banquet where eight of our managers celebrated building a strong biological foundation in Oregon.

We are grateful to have the opportunity to partner with organizations such as DU on collaborative wetlands protection efforts. View more of the great work they do by visiting the Ducks Unlimited website.

Learning and Career Day for Lane County high school students

The future of the local construction and aggregate industries depends on the education of our youth about the value of special trades. Delta offers internship opportunities in the construction management or engineering fields for college juniors and seniors. We are also excited to host more events like the Learning and Career Day we held on April 5 in partnership with Knife River, Wildish, Eugene Sand & Gravel and Elevate Lane County.

During this event, 60 juniors and seniors from Lane County high schools toured the Delta Sand & Gravel aggregate plant and Knife River concrete production facilities. Our experienced staff educated students in aggregate material production and construction, and introduced them to the job opportunities in our growing industry. The event was featured in KVAL’s Skilled to Work series, promoting the value of working in trades.

Annual Party for the Relief Nursery

The Relief Nursery helps to protect children in our community from abuse and neglect by strengthening families with the support services they need. We are passionate about helping such an important part of our community thrive, and one of the ways we show our commitment is to sponsor and donate to the Relief Nursery’s Annual Event.

For more than seven years, Delta has sponsored or donated to the Relief Nursery’s annual party. This year Delta sponsored the band, Precious Byrd, for the event’s after party. At our table were seated community members who were excited about providing direct donations or purchasing auction items to support the Relief Nursery.

Family Concert: Lemony Snicket’s The Composer is Dead!

Music brings joy to our lives, and Delta is in full support of bringing more music and joy to our families and yours. Last month we sponsored the Eugene Symphony’s inaugural Family Concert: “Lemony Snicket’s The Composer is Dead.” This event encouraged Lane County families to experience the joy of music and learn more about the Eugene Symphony.

As a family-friendly concert, the afternoon featured two showings of a musical performance based on Daniel Handler’s “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” Prior to the concert, attendees were invited to participate in free educational activities including an Instrument Petting Zoo, an art-themed Hult Center scavenger hunt and a prop-filled photo booth. The show then featured a hilarious inspector, a missing composer and a whole lot of musical fun.

Thank you to our Community Activities Committee

We are excited about the work we are doing in wetlands protection and within the Eugene-Springfield community, and we want to do more of that good work in the future. A huge part of that effort will be done by our 2018 Community Activities Committee. A huge thank you to our committee members: Brent Mobley (Construction Manager), Mike Harrison (Estimator), and Bill Rhoads (Concrete Superintendent), who helped to organize these sponsorships and other volunteer projects, and who will help us to stay involved in 2018. We’re looking forward to the events to come!

Yoncalla Early Works’ Playscape Project in Douglas County, Oregon

Posted on March 2, 2018April 16, 2018

Delta Sand and Gravel is proud to be partnering with Yoncalla Early Works and Yoncalla Elementary School to construct an outdoor playscape for kids younger than third grade in Douglas County, Oregon.

What is Early Works?

Early Works is a 10-year Children’s Institute initiative launched in 2010 to improve the development of young children in Oregon and to support their health and education, as well as their families. Currently, there are two Early Works sites: the original site at Earl Boyles school in Southeast Portland, and the second site at Yoncalla Elementary in Douglas County, Oregon.

The Children’s Institute and the Roseburg–based Ford Family Foundation joined forces with the Yoncalla School District to launch the rural Early Works site at Yoncalla Elementary in 2012. Yoncalla Elementary now serves 20 of its roughly 140 students with the Early Works Program.

Early Works schools focus on three key aspects of development:

  1. Implementing high quality education from birth;
  2. Supporting family engagement in their children’s learning; and
  3. Connecting health with schools.

Children within the program range in age level from less than one year old to the third grade. For more information about Early Works, visit their website.

What does the Yoncalla playscape provide for children in Douglas County?

Of Early Works’ goals for the program, social and emotional development, as well as engagement, attendance and STEM learning are all primary focuses in the construction plan for this new play space. With an art area, woodworking station, chalk wall, water pump and creek bed, musical play area, building zone and more, this site is rich with opportunities for young children to develop skills such as sharing, hand-eye coordination, creative thought processing and practicing physical activity.

What were Delta’s project responsibilities?

Delta is working on this project at a significantly reduced rate to give back to a community that many of its employees are a part of, and to support the great work that Yoncalla School District is doing to create successful learning environments for its students in the face of significant funding challenges.

Delta is performing the following duties for the new play space:

Delta Sand & Gravel:

  • Supply of gravels, beach sand and topsoil (loam)
  • Trucking of materials to the jobsite

Delta Construction Co.:

  • Labor
  • Equipment
  • Excavation
  • Underground drainage
  • Gravel, sand and topsoil placement
  • Concrete forming
  • Project management support

We also coordinated the hiring of additional project contractors and subcontractors, and the donation of materials and labor from these companies to help construct this fun educational space at the lowest cost to Yoncalla School District.

Additional Donations

Thank you to our fellow contributors to this project:

Rexius Commercial Landscape Division is contributing a partial donation to the Yoncalla Playscape Project, suppling and installing play chips, topsoil, sod, plants, and other landscaping components.

Island Fence is installing fencing around the project.

Herc Rentals in Coburg is renting equipment to the Project under partial donation.

Knife River Eugene is supplied and delivered concrete under partial donation to the project along with Delta Concrete.

Working with Delta Sand & Gravel

Delta Sand & Gravel and Delta Construction Co. are always looking for ways to create and cultivate resources for our community. Our construction and aggregate material production employees are very important to us, and we are excited to be able to support Douglas County, where many of them live and raise their families. If you have any questions for Delta about a donation or partial donation, our aggregate production, aggregate hauling or construction services, feel free to contact us. We offer free quotes and our central location between Springfield and Eugene make pickup simple for you.
